Like it or not if you write, make music, create art, or film you are in the souvenir business. Can what you do can be displayed in a digital medium? Then nobody is going to pay for it. Well almost nobody. Only those who want a souvenir.
I don't have to pay for music when there is Spotify or Rdio. I can listen to whatever I want whenever I want. I can view any piece of art or watch any piece of film online for free. I can read any new idea on a blog or website without having to buy a book (faster than a book could be published). Why would I pay for anything?
Epic Mealtime creates a Youtube video every week that gets over 1 Million views in the first day. Sure they make some advertising money, but everyone knows real profits come from products you can sell direct to the consumer. So if they give their videos away for free how do they make money? T-shirts. Souvenirs.
If you want to charge for your work, your fans will go somewhere else. They have options. All you can do is create exceptional content and give it away for FREE! Then if you fans really really love your work. If they have a memorable experience. They will want a t-shirt with your name on it, your book, CD, or original print. A Souvenir.
